Psychology A1

QUESTION #1:

So far we have talked about monism and dualism and nature vs. nurture. Tell me what your thoughts about it are? Which side do you lean towards?

I personally am a little between on both. I believe that the mind and the brain are connected, but after death there is something more. Your mind is connected to your thoughts and personality and so is the brain. As far as Nature vs Nurture, I lean more towards the Nurture side. I think that people can be nurtured to be the way they are because of the way I am. I feel like I am the way my parents "trained" me to be. I still think that there is a little of nature too. People are born with some things, but I believe that they can be nurtured to be a different way.

Like Mr. Hartshorn, I lean towards both the monist and dualist beliefs. I believe that there is a connection between the mind and the brain, but I also believe that the mind will go on after the brain is dead. The mind and brain are neither completely combined nor completely separated. For Nature vs. Nurture I lean more towards the Nature side but still believe that Nurturing has a very significant effect on who each of us are. Just like with the insane Dilly family with six children, each of us have our own personalities just as Adrian was a thrill seeker and Claire was a leader when they were only a year and a half old. However, one may also be Nurtured to be something different, such as a shy person may work on becoming more outgoing or even something simple like a girl dying her hair. Still, at the end of the day each of us still have the basic personalities that we have had since we were little.

Im right in the middle. i belive your mind and your brain one one but there is more after you die.
i belive that nurture plays more of a roll in my life. How i was raised is how i am today and all ways will be

I think that there is definitely a separation between the mind and the brain, but not entirely. I personally believe that when we die, our mind which contains our thoughts, emotions, knowledge, personality, goes on existing. But we have physical evidence that when we think, or have different emotions, parts of our brains are being used. So i think they connect at some level but they don't need each other to function. And for Nature Vs. Nurture, i definitely think that nature plays the biggest role in who we are. There are certain traits in everyone, that no matter what their environment is, will still shine through.

In my opinion i take both into consideration. By this i refereed to the monist and dualist concept because in order to be successful you have to take a little bit from both. Personally leaning into the dualist concept i think that your mind and brain both different subjects are related and that your mind goes on existing after death. As to why i lead on the monist side is because most monist consider fixing mental problems with that of medicine so if you lean in between you get a better sense of perspective. Leading on the subject Nurture is huge in this concept because lets say that your born with a nature defect well by being nurtured correctly that can fade away because due to being nurtured.

It seems as though, research is pointing more towards nature. From what i have read i have to agree with it. But i also believe that our environment has a significant toll on us. Nevertheless, i believe nature has a stronger influence on an individual then nurture. Hence, im in the middle.

I'm leaning towards the middle on both topics. I believe that the mind and the brain are connected, but I also believe that our mind continues on after we die. As for Nature vs. Nurture, I'm in the middle, but if I had to choose, I would most likely choose Nurture. I believe that how you are raised can have a huge impact on how you act during your lifetime.

Im probably about thee same as everyone else. I find myself in the middle but leaning more towards the dualist beliefs. I do believe your mind still exits somewhere else after you die. This life cant be that meaningless that once you die its all over. But at the same time your body and mind are connected while living.
Nature Vs. Nurture I find myself in the middle of this one again. There are things that are just out of your control that nature does for you, but you can still act and decide for yourself. - Helaman Perez -

I believe that that human has the brain and that's it. Once you die then you are gone forever. Any memories or thoughts that your brain had stored are gone and lost forever. Every sensation that you feel while you are here is controlled by that one organ and once it's gone it is all over. As for nature vs. nurture I think that nurture is a huge part of it and that the majority of who we are is determined by how we are raised.

This is a tough question. Too tough for my naive teenage mind to have fully grasped and considered completely. I find that my opinion on it is never stationary, always in flux with the trend my mind is taking. After days studying Darwin's elegant theories and being reduced to utter awe at Einstein's beautiful conclusions I can't help but feel a little monist in my thoughts. But it's not necessarily a dark and helpless view, reducing humans to mere robots. I seems to me that we are all part of a grand and beautiful dance that spans the universe. It makes me feel connected. But then I'll start living life and feeling the strange sensation of love and experiencing wonder at the beauty of the human soul, and a little dualism will creep in. As of now I'm content to continue pondering about this question which I don't think I'll ever fully resolve. As far as Nature vs. Nurture is concerned, I think Nature has a bigger impact on who we are. To me that's kind of a comforting thought. I am who I am, not solely based on how I was raised but because of something inside of me that is unique.

I think I am a little between the monist and dualist side, because I think there is a connection between your mind and your brain in some aspects, but they are still separate in that the brain controls the body, while the mind is in charge of what you think and feel. I think i am a little in the middle of nature and nurture too, but more on the side of nurture, because you are born the way you are, but we all go through different things that we learn from and we change because of it.

On the Monism and Dualism issue, I lean more toward the dualism side that there is something more after death. However I feel that there is some direct connection between the mind and the brain. On Nature Vs. Nurture I definitely believe a that Nurture plays a bigger part in who we are. I think that I am the way I am because of the way I was raised and the things I was taught.

Personally, I am more in the middle but I also believe that I am more on the dualist side just because I also believe that the mind lives on after death. On the nature vs. nurture matter, I am more on the nurture side, because I believe that the way our parents raise us is mostly the way we turn out.

I'm going to have to fence sit along with everybody else here. I believe that that the mind and the brain are undeniably related, as the state of your body determines how well you can think, but along with the belief of your mind being somewhere else after you die.
As for Nature vs. Nurture... I believe that nurture has more to do with how we are rather than it being inherited from genes. Your parents raise you and influence your behavior and things you experience while you are young.

I lean toward the dualist side, for religious reasons, and reasons of concept. What if once you died your mind died with it? Now try to visualize no thoughts, ideas, or any other workings of your brain, I personally find it nearly impossible to visualize.
On the topic of nature vs nurture, i think that your nature somewhat determines your nurture, people treat you differently if you are not the same as everyone else. But if I had to choose a side, I would choose nurture. I believe that how you act is bases upon your experiences. How you are raised has a huge impact on who you are. Over all I think that nurture has a way bigger impact on our life than nature, we are not born the way we are, we become who we are, through our choices.

In my opinion I think that both of these are very logical. I feel like "mind" in somewhat a conscience, or spirit. I think that once our physical bodies die, our mind lives on. I think that this "mind" sends signals to your brain, much like other reactions do, and your brain will respond.

When it comes down to Nature Vs Nurture, I think the nurture side is more realistic. No matter who you are, the situations and influence you have in your life nurture you to be who you are.

I see myself somewhere in the middle, but leaning toward the Monist Side. I believe that all the evidence and data we have shows that the Mind and the Brain are very closely related. Hardly anything that goes on in the brain that doesn't affect your mood, thoughts, personality, and drive. However, I think that ultimately, we do have a master button that allows us to make any decision we want to make, despite influences.

I'm in between nature and nurture. I believe that we are born a certain way, but our environment and the way we are raised can definitely affect who we become. And I guess I am more of a monist because I think mind is just another word for brain. But I don't think that after you die you are nothing. That would be so sad

I myself am somewhere between Monist and duelist, and even more towards duelist. They can't be totally separate because when we are young we learn from experience which leads to almost being a product of the brain. Yet at the same time we have no idea where the mind is located. With Nature vs. Nurture I am right in the middle. Everyone has instinct witch is the nature part of us. Then for nurture our parents, teachers, and many others have helped teach us right from wrong and many other things. Even though we still have to make an opinion from nature, we still have that nurture up bring that helps us choose

I agree with Joseph. I am both. I think that the mind and brain are that same but there is definately something after death. As far as Nature vs Nurture.. I am not sure yet. I'm indecisive.
