I would have to say that i am closer to the Dualist side of things. It seems to me that the brain controls the body. Making the heart beat, breathing, digesting, healing wounds and growing are all parts of what the brain does. The mind is in charge of what you think and feel. It creates who you are. However,I could be wrong.
I am probably more of a dualist. Like KB said, Without the brain the body wouldn't function. Without the mind we'd have no idea of who we are. Or who we want to be as a person.
i probably am a little bit of both, but more towards the dualist and nature. i think we're born with most the characteristics we'll have in our life, but that the environment we live in can have a little impact on which traits are more visible and all.
First off, Kayla, I think you might be confused between the meanings of nature and nurture. just sayin'
Anyways, I would say I'm a dualist, I believe the mind controls the brain as a separate object. Without a mind (spirit) you are just bags of meat. I also agree more with the nurture side of the argument. Yes, we are born with some characteristics and are apt to do some things by nature. But I would be so much different if I grew up in California or another place. I think that affects more of who we are than what we are born with.
I'm probably more dualist than monist. I think the mind and brain could possibly be separate functions.
I like to believe I was born with most of my characteristics I have developed, but I also believe that how I am nurtured has also and can have an effect on me.
I'm a little of both, but more towards dualist/nurture/nature. I know from personal experience that the brain has a big influence on the mind, but i think that how you are raised and the characteristics you are born with have bigger and further reaching effects on the mind than any "chemical imbalances".
I think that i would go with Dualist. It makes more sense to me or maybe i dont want to think that all the knowledge I have gained in life just dies with me. sad. I really do agree with dualist though.
I think that I'm kind of stuck inbetween. Because what would the body be without the mind? the mind is our personality, our thoughts, our memories. without the mind, the body would just be like an empty shell. But your body helps put those thoughts into actions, so you need the body for your mind, and the mind needs your body.
i am a dualist. i think that the brain controls our 5 senses, but doesn't affect our actions and the way we feel about things. they are two separate things completely, if your brain dies, your mind lives.
I'm definitely more of a dualist and I agree more with the nurture side. I do not believe you are born the way you are and there is nothing you can do about it. Sure you have certain characteristics and heriditary personality traits but overall you "choose" to be and act the way you want to, due to the environment you grew up in.
But yes I am a dualist because without the mind your brain couldn't function
I am more of a dualist myself. I believe that when you die that your spirit lives on and that you take your memories with you, but i also believe there is some connection to the mind and the brain.
I definitely lean more towards the dualist side of the argument. I'm sure it's because I am from a religious background and so the idea that you're nothing more after your brain dies is just ridiculous to me. In my head the brain and the mind are two totally separate things.
I am most definitely a dualist. I hate to think that once you die you loose every memory. Its like whats the point of living if when you die you cant remember your experiences. I am a dualist all the way!!
I feel Like I'm a little bit monist and dualist because to me it seems like our mind and brain could be one and work together. On the other hand I do feel like we will still have a mind after we die so it's hard to choose
I am definitely a monist. I really don't like referring to anything as the "mind," and if I did, I'd think of it as part of the brain. A large part of the brain is used for cognitive processes, so I'd imagine our personality and self to be a part of it. Why else would a brain tumor be an explanation for why the guy went on a killing spree at the university of Texas?
I definitely lean towards the dualist side more than the monist side... i feel that the mind and the brain are connected but they also seperate.. i'd like to believe that we don't lose our memories and conciousness when we die; it still exists. the brin dies but our minds are still in the unnniverrrse! :)
I lean more on the Dualist side. I believe that the mind is what controls our personality and emotions. The brain controls our bodily functions. Another reason i lean on this side, like Meg, is because i don't want all that happened to me and all i learned to die with me. On the other topic i lean more on the Nature side. Identical twins, when in there older adolescent years, will have around the same IQ. I think that, like Ryan, the environment plays a role in our personalities and traits, just not as much as how we were born.
Dualist for sure! The brain and mind are two different things. I don't see how anyone could be monist after the disscusion we had in class. I also beleive that both nature and nurture play huge parts in the developement of someones personality and character and that they are pretty close to equal in the developement of those to characteristics.
I am a dualist. I believe that mind/spirit and the physical brain are two different things. I don't see it any other way because once our physical body is gone that can't be the end of our very being. Life would be pointless.

I'm kind of thinking i'm a dualist. the mind and the brain work with each other to make us who we are. with out one the other one wouldn't work.
