I would not categorize myself as either a monist or a dualist because I see the mind only as a word or idea used to help explain and simplify difficult concepts. I don't lean towards nature or nurture, either, because they are too interdependent to be viewed as separate things. The two terms are so reciprocating that they might as well be self-reciprocating.
I belive the mind uses the brain as a vessel in which it contains our thoughts. Which is what a dualist belives. I don't lean towards Nature nor Nurture. Were all destined to be someone in life weather it's good or bad. Therefore we should just let Nature take its course. But then again we are the person we are today because of our parents.
I myself am kind of stuck between monism and dualism. I believe in certain situation medication for a person is a possibility when therapy isn't working out or anything else. When talking about Nature v. Nurture, I believe in both. Their are things that we are born with such as physical traits and others. But nurture is when we are really formed. The environment we are exposed to and the people we are around has such a great influence on who we are and who we become. But I believe we always have choice on whether we want the environment and people to influence us.
I think that I lean more towards being a dualist because I really do think that the mind and the brain are two different things. I think this because of the religion prospective of it. I think that our spirit already comes with a mind. And for the nature vs. nurture I'm not sure, I think that it depends on how you're raised and your culture. But I don't lean toward any of those.
I'm a dualist I believe. I think we have our brain and it makes our body work and what not. I think the mind isn't apart of that. It's something separate and more special than the brain. The brain controls our feelings, but the mind is what creates them and makes us explore that.
I would have to say that I would lean more towards a monist perspective, simply because I believe that they are connected; what happens in the mind is directly linked to the body, and vice versa. When it comes to nature v. nurture, there's so much of both that I really don't lean too much to either side. There are things that we are born with, and then there are traits and attributes that come from our surroundings.
I think that the mind and brain are two seperate things. Our brain is a physical object that you can touch while the mind in my opinion is a subconcious thing that is just kind of there.............I hope that doesn't sound stupid....
I believe the brain are two separate and distinct things making me a dualist, the reason why is that a monist believes that the mind and the brain are the same thing which could be true but they think that helping someone overcome something can be resolved in medication, which personally I think is not good for your brain. Now nature is like something you are born with like traits while nurture is the way you were raised and were you lived ( I dont know what i'm talking about)
As far as monist and dualist go, I'm more for dualist. With nature vs nurture I think there is some of both with everyone. However,I completely disagree on the fact that people think that homosexuality is nature. That's one of the only problems I have with that. I do not understand why or how people think that.
I believe in a dualist point of view. I play sports, and in sports sometimes you reach a point where your brain is telling you to stop. Why don't you stop? Cause we have control over our mind and can force ourselves against what our brain says. I shattered my collar bone this past football season. My brain said, "Ow, stop it." I didn't know my collar bone shattered, so i forced myself to keep playing through the pain even though my brain said otherwise. From the way i see it, there is no possible way for the brain and mind to be the same thing. How would we be able to do things when our brain tells us not to if they were the same?
I believe that we are a little bit of both because I don't think that our mind and brain are completely separate because I have seen the effects of medication on those who are depressed but I also don't think that they are totally together because I do think that you can think postively and over power what the brain is telling you. Also I don't think that when you are dead your mind dies with your body. I tend to lean more towards nurture in the nature vs. nurture debate because I think that many of our habits are learned or we self teach it but there needs to be a balance in this also. I think that we are born with some of our personality but we learn the majority of it.
I am in between a monist and a dualist. I believe that at times the mind and the brain can be the same and they can be separate. I lean more towards nurture. I believe that the way you were brought up plays a huge part in who you will become.
Alissa Carlson: I would definately catorigize myself as a dualist because I really do believe that the mind and the brain are different things. They are not only different things but they do completely different things. For example the mind is what are thoughts are and our brain is where all of our inteligence comes from. I honestly don't believe the mind is there either but I do believe it is something. I am also a big nurture girl rather than nature because I feel like it doesn't matter what you are born with if you want to be a little bit different you can and that does have a lot to do with how you are raised.
I follow more of the beleifs of a monist then a dualist. I beleive that the mind and the brain are connected and are the same thing. Although I strongly believe that the mind lives on once the brain and body dies. I strongly beleive in nurture. You can nuture a child up all its life and you can give it proper education and that child can be whatever it wants to be.
I am split between monism and dualism. I think that your mind and brain are two sperate things, but they still affect each other in different ways. I lean more towards nurture. When you are born you might be genetically more likely to be a certain way, but based on how you are raised you can become a much different person.
I would probably be more in the dualist side. Reason being is because I believe that the brain and mind are two totally different things. The brain is more physical and it controls our body more.. And the mind controls more of the stuff we can't touch... Like our thoughts and such.. I think.
I would have to agree with the dualism. I don't think if someone is deppressed they just take some pills and it can make them feel better. i think they would need to talk it out and try and help the proplem.
I think I am probably more on the dualist side. I definitely think the mind and brain are connected, but I think the mind is a lot more than just the brain, and has to do with more of the soul and spirit too. Pills can help people to a certain extent, just like the brain is part of the mind, but in many cases, therapy is also a major help to people in working out problems in the long run. I think for nature vs. nurture there are different things that fall under both categories so it's hard to say which is "more influential." Ellie Eyestone B2
Taylor Bradford: I gravitate more toward the dualist mindset. Although I believe that it is obvious that the mind and the brain are connected, I do not believe that they are inseparable.
I wouldn't say im monist our a dualist because i believe a little bit of both. I believe certain things from both which makes it difficult for me to decide. Same with nature vs. nurture, when we grow up in a certain environment we become like the things and the people that we grew up around.
I wouldn't say im monist our a dualist because i believe a little bit of both. I believe certain things from both which makes it difficult for me. i beleave that nature and nurture are very indapendent tings
I would not say im either because i can take both sides because sometimes I can beleave that the mind and the brain are the same thing and I can also beleave that the mind and brain are different. nurture is how you are rased by your parents but your suroundings are the nature of how your parents rased you. It works with boths sides.
