A3 Question #4

I've mentioned several times during class that what we perceive as reality is actually a recreation of "reality" by our senses and our brain. In other words, what we think is real, might not be real at all! So I guess my question to all of you is how does this make you feel? How confident can we feel that the world we experience is actually how the world is? How would we test something like that? Is our "reality" then all that matters in the long run even though our reality might be completely different from another persons? And since all of us experience the world through our own reality, making this very subjective, is there an actual real world out there that we are unable to perceive? Or is reality subjective to the one perceiving? In other words, what is real to us is real, period. There is no need to consider what is actually real because what we perceive is it, nothing more.

Wow, just writing this question has me boggled as well. You can get a serious headache pondering all of this stuff. Anyway, have fun sharing your thoughts about this subject. Don't feel like you need to answer every question.

I think this is a disturbing concept to each of us, considering that as high school students, we place great value on our own image. Under that concept, it would mean that while one thins they are the coolest person in the world, the next person might think that they are just full of it.

I think that we try to ignore the possibility of such a concept in order to refrain from damaging our confidence.

One way to test it would be to create a poll. Polls show that people have different views on a similar topic.

I'd have to say that I believe there is simply one reality, yet we all perceive it differently.

I agree that the world may not be how we think it is. Everyones experiences are different. two people put in the same position will still have a different perception of how the experience was for them an example. put two people in the exact same environment give them a...banana one my love bananas and love the experience the other may hate the experience because they hate bananas. if that makes sense. but it is weird to me. maybe even a little scary that my world isn't how I think it is.

I think that because we perceive differently, our world is better. If everyone experienced the same thing then there would be no difference, no individuals, we would all be the same.
I wonder why we all perceive, but none of us perceive the exact same thing. Is it possible to change what others perceive?
It would be very mind boggling if we could experience the reality of another person. What would it be like, how would we feel?
Right here and right now, our reality matters to us. The average teenager's reality is consumed with their selves. If we could step out of our own lives and slip into another, could we become a better people?

This is way over our heads. But i want to say that we are all just in a fake world and are controlled by a higher people or power. We are machines and test dummies for something greater than what we are. We cant answer this question correctly because we have no control or grasp on it.

Hmm... Well, while I can't help but feel you got the inspiration for this question from Inception I will try to answer it without any references to it.

It's hard to understand this question purely because we can't fully see into other people's worlds as well as they can. I think that nobody really knows what TRUE reality is because of that; people can know their own reality though. There is not just one reality. It depends on your personality as a human being.

I answered it the best I could, but I don't see how this question could ever really be answered

Yeah, It's kind of freaky to think that i see the world one way but another person might see it completely different. like how a simple word can mean a compliment to someone and to another; their past experiences have made them come to realize that it is not as kind of a word the other person perceives it.

Because I have perceived observations that have been the result of some action, I am pretty confident that the information that comes to my brain through my senses is reality.

I dont think that we could live life and have false reality coming through our senses.

What if what we see isn't real? This is a pretty scary thought if you really think about it. What we perceive is real to us though so I suppose it doesn't really matter how others perceive it. My reality may not be someone else's reality but it is mine. It is how I comprehend things and understand everything around me. There probably isn't one reality because every single person is completely different.

It is very interesting to consider that we see may not be very accurate in what is actually there. But at the same time, it's that way for everyone, so is there really an accurate reality. Truth is in the eye of the beholder right? For the most part however, people agree upon most things about reality. It is interesting to look at something and see how many ways there is to perceive it. Take Jake and Kayla for example, are they really in love? Does Kayla look at Jake the same way he looks at her? It's very hard to tell what other's perceive some things as. I really don't think there's a way to make an accurate test to see how most perceive things. People are just too different. But like I said, we don't have to worry about it too much, because most people can look outside and sense mostly the same things. Like the weather, and the buildings and the people.

I think reading that question made my head hurt. But i don't think that it really matters if the reality we think we're experiencing is real or not, because its the only thing we know and its real to us and we make decisions based on our reality, not the "real" reality that might be out there. The only thing that matters is how we perceive things because that will affect how we react to everything in our lives, not how anyone else perceives it, or how it "really" might be, but how we look at it. Your perception of the world is what counts and what matters to you.

I don't even know if I'm answering the right question, but I've always wondered if I see things differently than other people. For example, what if the color that I saw as blue was what someone else saw as yellow and still called it blue? if we all just saw different colors, but they were called the same name. What if that is how it was with everything?? Then there would be no way to tell if we all saw things differently, because to us it's how the world is. it's normal to us.

I personally think this subject and question should not have been asked, cause im pretty sure mr. fong just likes to make our heads hurt! But what i really think about all this, if everything wasnt real then everthing we do is worthless, so i say are mind set has to always be, yes what we do and almost everything we do is real. but we all see reality differently yet its the same thing we are all seeing. thats what i think.

What you see is what you get. That's really what reality all comes down too. When you're looking at something that's what you're loooking at. Someone can be looking at the same object but just won't perceieve it the same way. That's the bottom line. At first I didn't get the concept. When you showed us the picture of the violin I got frustrated that people weren't seeing what I was seeing, but affter the lesson I realized that this is an every day thing. Nobody is going to see something the same way I view it. No matter what. My mind is my own and nobody is gonna think the way I do. Pretty cool if you think about it.

This is exactly like inception. There are sometimes that while in reality we feel that are in a dream. For example, when I went to California over Christmas Break, after I went to bed and woke up, I forgot I was in California, it still felt like a dream because I had not been there pretty much since I moved. I feel that if we really didn't know the difference between reality and unreality, then we need to get more sleep... though there are probably ways to test that, like putting your head in cold water. I often think about all that goes on in the world, while I am living my own world, my own reality. Like in Japan with the earthquake and tsunami. I was probably sleeping while those people over there were experiencing hell. Of course there are different perspectives in the world because no one else is experiencing what we are. Reality is reality where ever you are. Sometimes we are just too busy to notice what else is going on in reality. Also you got to remember that decisions you make will cause a ripple effect, whether good or bad, changing experiences or perceptions in someone's reality. Confusing stuff.

Couldn't everybody perceive differently and this is why people have different personalities?

example: if I see the color blue, couldn't another be seeing red, or another color that no one else but him has ever perceived? Maybe his whole sensory and conceptual knowledge of colors has a different understanding.

I don't know...this question is bugging my mind... hopefully that makes sense...

Well this stuff is super confusing but I do believe that every individual perceives something different. Each person in the same circumstance or position can perceive two different things...it is all based on us as a person and how our brain works. I guess that we can all be pretty positive that all the things around us are real just because it seems impossible for one brain to come up with everything that happens, but I guess it's possible that none of the things around us are real.

If you think about this question for too long they’ll have to put you in a mental institution! It's so weird that one person perceives something one way but another might perceive it completely different. Such as, do two people see the color red the exact same way or do they see it as something else or do two people view the pictures from a movie the same? I don’t believe we can really ever test this because of all the complications of the eye and brain and honestly if what we see isn’t real, I don’t want to know. It’s just too creepy.

If reality is my perception then me typing this response is reality. Reality is if i do this my grade will go up tremendously. This concept puts me to ease cause i don't have to worry about the space time continuum cause i am reality. Whatever i perceive with my 5 senses is real. Every one else' reality is a different world there are no two identical worlds that are the same. Every stimuli helps shape our unique reality.

I think everyone is diffrent and unique in their own ways and belive something is real when it's not. others don't belive something when it's acually real.Reality is diffrent from someone elses point of view.It makes me feel that "life is but a dream".And everything going on in our lives is just an illusion, a dream. and when we finally awake we will have another slim shot at life..
