B4 Question #4
I've mentioned several times during class that what we perceive as reality is actually a recreation of "reality" by our senses and our brain. In other words, what we think is real, might not be real at all! So I guess my question to all of you is how does this make you feel? How confident can we feel that the world we experience is actually how the world is? How would we test something like that? Is our "reality" then all that matters in the long run even though our reality might be completely different from another persons? And since all of us experience the world through our own reality, making this very subjective, is there an actual real world out there that we are unable to perceive? Or is reality subjective to the one perceiving? In other words, what is real to us is real, period. There is no need to consider what is actually real because what we perceive is it, nothing more.
Wow, just writing this question has me boggled as well. You can get a serious headache pondering all of this stuff. Anyway, have fun sharing your thoughts about this subject. Don't feel like you need to answer every question.

I'm glad we don't have to answer them all, since I can't even remember what half of those questions were. I've actually wondered about this before, most specifically with color. What if my blue is your red? And your green my yellow? How would we know, or tell the difference?
I never figured out an answer to that, I think cause I just got bored of thinking about it. As for the questions at hand, I suppose there's no reason that the world we perceive is necessarily the world as it is. If our eyes are designed to focus the light that is actually around us, would that mean that people with blurry vision actually see the "real" world more accurately? I have no idea, but just saying.
Anyway, for me it really doesn't matter. For me, I believe in an eternal plan for my soul, and the way I see it everything in my life has to do with that plan. And honestly, whether or not the world I perceive is the way the world is or not doesn't really affect that eternal scheme- all I know is I have a body which allows my spirit to interact, grow, and learn in this world, and however my body allows me to do that (even if it does make up the perception I have of the world around me) is good enough for me.
And yes, I do have the right to express my religious beliefs in a school setting, if you were wondering.
I have also wondered about this stuff before. It has been my understanding for quite some time that we don't actually "see" things, we only see light. We can't actually see objects or people, even though these things are actually there and real for that matter, but the only thing our eyes really pick up is the different shades of light as it shines and reflects off of things. I could be wrong about this, I don't remember who told me about this a few years ago, it could have been one of my brothers, but hearing about this makes me wish that I could be able to see everything for reals. Sometimes when I think too much about this, it makes me feel like "The Trumen Show" where everything has been fake my whole life and I need to get out and experience everything literally because I have been deprived of what is "real" my whole life. But then I just put the mindset on that I am already in reality, I've been here my whole life, this is as "real" as life get's. Whoa! Is there anyone else whose mind was blown by this question? Talking about this stuff reminds me of Inception! Good movie!
I think the world is basically what we perceive it as. I recognize there are going to be a few difference between the way that I perceive things and say a person who is colorblind perceives things, but compared to the large amount of data that is coming into our sense I believe that these differences are inconsequential. -Taylor
In my eyes reality is exactly want we perceive. And if it's not then it doesn't really matter because we all think that reality is what we are living in. But really we could be in a totally different place then we think we are. Ignorance is bliss. The fact that i don't know that there is anything different doesn't bug me. And in the end we all have a relatively similar perspective or we wouldn't be able to coordinate so well. Maybe there is a different world around us, but we all see it in a similar way. So it can't make a big difference if there is a "real" world or not. Frankly i don't think there is anything wrong with my perspective.
I believe that what i see and what I've experienced is my reality. my reality could be different from someone else, because everyone see's things differently. there is a real world out there but no one knows what its like because we all have our own individual worlds. some people see the world as depressing and dark others might see the world as sunny and bright and happy. everyone see's things differently. what i know and have seen is my world and i don't care if its different from yours.

There are factors that can influence how a person perceives such as if they are colorblind or suffer from a mental disorder. But for people who do not suffer from either one of those conditions, our experiences influence how we perceive the world individually. We see things differently than other people, and that doesn't mean our perspective is wrong. I think the world is what you make it to be in your mind.
I think that everyone's reality is different. No one really goes through life and views life the same. So the way everyone perceives the world is different. So what I think is real or not real another person can have completely different views. Take religion for example everyone has their own personal opinion on it and everyone views it differently. Just like all the other things in the world. So my reality is different then my sister's or mom's or friend's. And i think that thinking about what's real and what isn't is not very good because it could really mess some people up cause they might not have an answer for it.
During your class i spaced out for a time but i was thinking about this so its ok. What is reality. We call a certian color "red" because we have been told that it is "red". But what if you say it as the color that i see i would be "blue" to you? What if you saw the world as i see a film negative but it looks fine because it looks that way anyway. And taste? Is sweet sweet because you have been told that your brain interpiting the sensory information as a certian sensation is sweet but what if it is bitter but you have been told it is sweet so it is. What of reallity? What if you were a being of vast, unfathomable consoisness and this is a simulation in your mind of what ifs. and in reallity there is no such thing as space, time, energy, gravity or anything else familier. what if the people you meet are really just spit off perts of your consioness that you are running through this vast simulation but now you are trapped and you cant get out. What if there is no such thing as existance and this is just a cosmic "burp" (dissclaimer, i do not belive the last stuff but i have thought about it)
We all believe in many things are real, but we also believe things that others do not so to me everything is real, but fake as well. you see what could be real to me can be fake for other and vice versa.
I think that if we didn't know what we saw like if we were told that a color was blue then we think that it's blue, but if someone told us that it was green but it was really blue we wouldn't know because it was what we were taught. We are constantly confronted with challenges at work, at home, in relationships, etc.
Practically everywhere we turn, things happen that may make life appear more difficult
than it really is.
i think that it all depends on our perspective and that there really isn't a "real' world..... we all see different stuff. how do we see different stuff i think it has to do with how we were raised and our religion and also where we were raised and born and stuff like that. for example if i was born here and i met another person from say new york how they would perceive Utah would be way different then how i perceive Utah. so i think it all has to do with perspective. ~Ashley stallings
Reality is our own perception of the world based on our experiences and what we see. For each of us our realities our different because we all experience different things. It like an opinion we could all watch the same movie and some of us may like it and some of us won't. Our opinion is based on our experiences and so is our reality. Our world may be something different that we percieve it as but how can we test it if all of us have our own reality. I don't think we can. But, in the end it doesn't really matter. We all have different realities and thats okay! -Jessica Clark

.. All I know is that my perception of the world is the best one, because so many things look and act funny to me. For instance Mr. Fong.
But thinking about it makes me dizzy and wanting to shut my computer off and go to sleep. Sleep. I love sleeping, and tonight I will probably maybe dream too.
If we all perceive the 'reality' around us differently, will also our consciousness and subconsciousness be different?
However, I don't think that the perceiver of his or hers world should worry about it, because if everyone differs from each other - why is there a problem? Obviously there is no real answer or correct perception of the world.
I also think something is interesting, since we might be perceiving everything around us slightly differently or very differently, how come we in general kind of agree on what is beauty and what not?
Oh wow. I just had a revelation. REVELATION.
People must perceive (this word has been used too many times already, my bad) the world differently. Look at how we in richer and more industrial countries view beauty as skinny and flawless, while in Africa they consider a *in danger of using the wrong word, I apologize beforehand* fat woman beautiful because it shows wealth.
I read that in an essay once.

Everyone has a different perspective of things, and to him or her that’s the truth… or their reality.
One person may see a sculpture and see a totally different image then the next individual to view it. This doesn’t mean that one person’s interpretation is wrong; it just shows everyone is different.
My opinion is this. Although we all live on the same planet, we don’t all live in the same world, our brains can create a wonderful evaluation of how, where, and what we live. But because our brains can do this we all have a different view of the world. If you take a cereal killer and monk into separate rooms and ask them the exact same questions about life and the world we live in today. Their answers are going to be completely opposite. This is all because of their past experiences and the way they perceive the world today. The cereal killer’s perception is going to be full of fear, hate, sadness, and things that reflect on his past. While the monks perception will be one of joy, love, and peace. Each has a unique and different reality.
So to sum it all up I believe that everyone has a different view of things and that’s okay
I think that what we see is real to us. That is our reality and that is how we live. I think that you can relate it to how people react differently to different things. For a example a scene of an accident has different effects on people by what they see. Some might see the blood and pass out where as others might get down to work and help out. It is just the way you look at the situation.
for reals!!! for all we know we could all be in little pink bath tubs with needles slid in our brains that connects our senses and make an artificial reality that we think is real. i bet if we train our minds hard enough, we could do some serious back bending and bullet stopping for sure.
CEREAL KILLER! AAAAAAAAH AHAHAHA, Carly, you just cracked the heck out of me. Cereal killer. Aaah.
And the fact that I actually am eating Reese's Puffs CEREAL right now, makes my laughter stay. It's gonna stay all night.
I think every one does have their own perception of reality and that isnt always a bad thing. Yes maybe someones blue is my red, but does that make my reality wrong? Or unusual? Not wrong, yes maybe unusual but who is to say that my reality is correct and theirs isn't?
Trying to test it would be almost impossible, the world changes every day! Something is new and different every single day and there is no way to truly know if it is part of this "reality" we are talking about. Because who gets to decide what this reality is?
Reality is how we see the world through our own eyes. Reality to me is something different than reality to you. So I guess that means there are a lot of 'real worlds' out there because everyone lives in their own little world.
There isn't one world that everyone can perceive, we all perceive the world differently. It's crazy to think when two people are viewing the same thing, it may be different. My reality is all that matters to me because I will never be able to see someone else's reality. What each person percieves is normal, because we haven't seen it any other way.
I think there is one reality but we all have our own take on it. Its like saying a type of food is gross.. some people may like it and some people may hate it but the taste is the same, its just how we perceive it and our personal preference. Everyone will see the world differently because they'll twist it to fit them better, but that doesn't change the fact that the world is what the world is. Period!
crap there are two tanner's. Thats Tanner L ^
I think that reality is subject to ones percieving. I think that our reality is different from everyone elses. Because, if you go through life and look at all the bad and negitive things, then you'll percieve the world as a horrible place but if you percieve things as good and postive then your reality of the world will be that it's a better place, even though it's the same world with both good and bad.
i know that we all perceive things differently, and i think its completly possible that there may be a "real world" that we are unable to perceive. I am not sure if there is any way to test this, heck for all we know we may be living in the matrix, but i think all that is important is to concentrate on the life we perceive and try to be the best we can be in this world.
Everyone precieves things differenty. Lets talk about nuclear melt down in Japan, its reality. What about the people in the west coast, Are they going to get sick from radiation. Its a perception because they are worried so they are being prepared. the perception is made from reality.
Is my answer going to be precieved as correct or is it in reality correct?
I think that every person has, in a sense, their own reality. It is completely understandable that each individual sees and perceives things differently and in their own way. I think it has to do with their understanding of what they are seeing.
My opinion on reality and perception is the following: Everyone has a different variation of reality. Of course they are not totally different, but they differ in the way we perceive things, for example the abstract pictures we looked at in class.. Another good example is religion. I agree with x3lalalovex3. Everybody has a different point of view on religion. The point is nobody as the exact same reality as any other person in the world. That is what makes us individuals!
