A3 Question #5

Well kids :) I haven't put up a question for a while so I need to repent. So, let me say...on the topic of consciousness... I think the most fascinating thing about this unit is the idea that we have a two-track mind. Our realization of an action seems to lag behind the actual action itself. In other words, by the time you realize you have told your body to do something, a message had already been sent to do what you want your body to do. Sounds crazy I know. But it seems that things happen without us even being aware of it. As I ponder this concept, I can't help but think of the concept of free-will. As humans, we pride ourselves in our ability to make conscious decisions but now it appears that an action can take place without us even being aware of it. So, what implications does this have on the concept of free-will and personal responsibility? How can we be responsible for an action when that action occured without us even realizing it? Anyway, think about this and help me resolve this conundrum.

This is a hard question to answer. But i think we are still responsible because it has been shown that we can be in the same situation twice, and have different responses each time. It's our subconscious telling our bodies what to do before we realize it, but that's still us making the decision, just without knowing it.

I think that you can still take responsibility for your own actions. Even though your brain is sending messages before you want to do something. It is in accordance to who you are and what you would do anyway. Your brain would not send messages that are against who you are.

Well i think the things that we do without realizing it are just things we've done out of habit and at one point made a conscious decision to do. And its not like you would be doing anything too crazy without realizing it, at least you would hope so.

I also say that we are still responsible for what we do. Even if what we do is a few moments delayed.
Most of what we do is out of habit. We are just doing what humans know best.

I don't really think that it really makes a difference either way... Our brain is part of ourselves and our brain makes these, I guess, "subconscious decisions". I don't think this effects what we should think we have control over and what we don't. It's not like our hands are going to do something that we don't want to do without us not realizing it until after it happens. Well for the most part I would hope. At least that's how it is for me. :)

When we talked about this in class, I didn't really understand it that well. It doesn't make sense that we perform an action before we think about doing it. I've always been taught the opposite. Anyways, I think maybe as humans we look at something or think about something and figure out a variety of potential actions we could take and then without us knowing, our body chooses one of these actions we have come up with and performs it. That doesn't really make a lot of sense either, but perhaps.

We should still be held responsible for our OWN actions. It’s still us that do the act, it’s not like someone else is controlling what your body does. I guess what I’m trying to say is, whether it be conscious or subconscious, it’s still you.

I've still never really understood this concept but I do believe we are the ones responsible for our actions. I guess basically we do the things we do out of our habits... I don't think that makes that much sense but maybe it's just a conscious decision?

We are still resposible for every action we take. Our brain wouldn't necessarily just totally go against who we are and send the wrong kind of messages so I guess I agree with everyone when they say its our habits that causes us to do the things we do.

I think that we act the way we want to act in the sense that when we commit an action, realizing we made the action or not, it was the action we wanted to make
